ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dr. Jacobs is a highly respected clinical psychologist, currently in private practice in Laguna Beach, California. She is also Adjunct Professor of Psychology at UCLA where she was administrator of the UCLA Psychology Clinic for 19 years. Prior to that she was Director of the Counseling Center at University of California, Irvine. Her rich and varied career includes writing, teaching, research, supervision, administration, media presentations and public education, in addition to extensive clinical practice.

Most recently Dr. Jacobs was honored with an invitation to write a definitive article on self-help for the first revision in 30 years of the prestigious International Encyclopedia of the Social and Behavioral Sciences. She is also the author of 24 professional articles in professional journals, two book chapters and co-author of the Common Concern Program, a published, nationally distributed audio and print package that guides a group of strangers with a common problem in forming and running an effective self-help group.

Dr. Jacobs, who is well qualified to discuss clinical concepts within the framework of the latest social science research, is especially adept at sharing professional knowledge with the general public. An expert in self-help and a skilled public speaker, she has been a member of the American Psychological Association's Media Referral Service since 1983. Her credits include numerous workshops, lectures, interviews with TIME, Cosmopolitan, Newsweek, Health and Fitness, Ladies Home Journal, Fitness, and the Los Angeles Times among others, as well as radio and television appearances, including a guest appearance to discuss self-help on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Dr. Jacobs, a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the science honor society Sigma Xi, was graduated summa cum laude from Brooklyn College. She earned her doctorate from the University of Southern California. In addition to her private practice and academic appointments at UCLA and UC Irvine, Dr. Jacobs was honored with a Distinguished Humanitarian Contribution award from the California Psychological Association and listings in Who's Who in America and Who's Who of American Women. She is co-founder of PsychSupport, a group of licensed psychotherapists who provide volunteer psychological assistance to Laguna Beach in times of local disaster.

Dr. Jacobs lives in Laguna Beach where she is active in community affairs. Family and friends are the centerpiece of her life. Fun activities include daily walks in the hills with her Australian Shepherd, cooking, writing and sailing.
